1. Fiber Preparation
The first step in paper manufacturing is preparing the raw material, which is usually wood pulp. Wood logs or recycled paper are processed to separate the fibers and remove impurities. This can involve soaking, shredding, or grinding the material.
2. Pulping
The separated fibers are then placed in a large container called a "pulper" with water and chemicals. The pulper agitates the mixture, breaking down the fibers further and separating them from non-fiber components.
3. Cleaning and Screening
The pulp undergoes a cleaning process to remove any remaining impurities such as dirt, rocks, and metals. It is then screened to separate larger fibers from smaller ones, ensuring consistency in the pulp composition.
4. Refining
The pulp may go through a refining process where it passes through rotating discs or refiners, which mechanically refine and break down the fibers to improve their bonding properties.
5. Pressing
Excess water is removed from the wet paper sheet by passing it through rollers or pressing it between felt blankets. This process compresses the fibers and consolidates the sheet while further reducing its moisture content.
6. Drying
The partially dried paper goes through a series of heated dryer cylinders or a steam-heated drying section to remove the remaining moisture. This helps to increase the paper's strength and stability.
